Many years ago, Gerdt Furniture & Interiors was the dream of Edward Gerdt. While working as a police detective for the City of Indianapolis and raising four sons, he put money into savings every week toward his goal. Finally, in 1959, Ed was able to open a small store in Southport, “Gerdt Bedding Brokers” and specialized in mattresses. As customers began asking for different items, Mr. Gerdt broadened the inventory by adding case goods. Gerdt Furniture & Interiors was born!

Ed was the sole salesperson, while sons, George and John, made the deliveries. Ed’s wife, Ethelynne, took a correspondence course in Interior Design and became the stores’ “design staff”.

As customers’ needs grew, so did the product lines to furniture and carpets. It soon became apparent that this family-owned business was developing a wonderful reputation for smart fashion, great price and fantastic customer service. Gerdt Furniture became known as a “fashion house” that understood value. Gerdt was not just another chain store!

The family vowed to go where their customers needed them. So, Gerdt grew by opening a store in the Castleton area in 1986. In 1992, Gerdt Furniture & Interiors moved out of their original location into the new 50,000 square foot “flagship” store, still, in Southport!

Gerdt seemed to have found the secret for successful growth; carrying name brands drove the business. People could buy the same furniture pieces for less at Gerdt than in the department stores. As the business grew, so did the customer base, requiring, yet, another expansion. In 1999 the Greenwood warehouse was added. This warehouse allowed all inventoried items to be centrally located, thus creating more showroom space for the existing stores. Continued growth welcomed another generation to the business. John’s children, Carey and David, joined the business and have been an invaluable part of the current success. With all of these components, Gerdt Furniture continued to go to great lengths to find fashion that was affordable!
